ARE YOUR TINTS LEGAL?
With the police clamping down on window tints we thought we would let you know where you stand and what the law is.
Tinted Windows are yet another fashion accesory which has become quie popular recently. Tinted windows that are designed by manufacturers to allow a minimum required amount of light through them and this differs from the front windscreen to the front door glass windows. The reasons for this are so that in poor or night time visibility drivers still have enough light coming through the glass to enable them to see properly.
The Western Area Roads Policing department stated "Having heavily tinted windows will seriously reduce your view in certain weather condititions and most definatly night time."
THE LAW
The legal requirements allowed are 75% of light through the front windscreen and 70% of light through the front side door windows,However any rear door/quarter windows and rear windows are not included in this requirement and can be tinted as heavily as you like.
THE POLICE DO NOW HAVE INSTRUMENTS WHICH CAN MEASURE THE SEVERITY OF A TINTED WINDOW AND IF CAUGHT YOU COULD BE SUBJECT TO A £60 FIXED PENALTY NOTICE AND 3 PENALTY POINTS ON YOUR LICENCE
Please note this is only to be used as a guide, if you are unsure ask at your local police station.
